Girard was honored with a bronze ranking in “America’s Best High Schools”, a report compiled annually by US News and World Report.

The survey of 21,786 high schools in 48 states evaluates schools on how well they educate all students, including minority and disadvantaged students, and how well students are prepared for college. Girard and Bloomfield High School were the only Trumbull county schools ranked. Nationwide, less than 1800 schools received recognition.

US News & World Report says its determination is based on “the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes” to show its successes across a variety of indicators. The rankings are based on test scores and college readiness.

Girard Principal William Ryser received a letter of congratulations from Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah S. Delisle, which stated, in part, the “honor is certainly a testament to the high quality education Girard Sr. High School provides.” Delisle added that the “teachers, staff and students are to be commended for their hard work and commitment to achieving excellences. It is clear [Girard] has established a positive and supportive environment that fosters learning and academic achievement.” Girard High School has been ranked as an excellent school on the State Report Card three years in a row. Girard High School will move to a new building on Shannon road in September 2010.
